The Special Committee for Commemorative Project Members s, The Physical Society of Japan
At the 80th Board of Directors meeting, the proposal from The Special Committee for Commemorative Projects to establish a "Physics Day" was approved in the board meeting held in September 2024. The goal of this initiative is to use the establishment of "Physics Day" as an opportunity to further promote public awareness of the connection between physics and the public, particularly among middle school, high school, and university students, as well as the general citizens.
The year 2025 marks the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, as designated by the United Nations and UNESCO, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the matrix mechanics paper by Heisenberg et al. In 2026, The Physical Society of Japan will celebrate its 80th anniversary, and in 2027, it will be the 150th anniversary of the founding of The Tokyo Mathematical Society (later The Japan Mathematico-Physics Society). These milestone years will be celebrated through various commemorative events. To oversee these initiatives, The Special Committee for Commemorative Projects has been newly established and is planning a range of celebratory activities. As part of this effort, we aim to establish "Physics Day" with the hope that it will remain a cornerstone for physics outreach activities long after these milestone years have passed. Ideally, we envision that the period surrounding "Physics Day" will evolve into "Physics Week," with various outreach activities taking place annually.
We are now inviting proposals from our JPS members and affiliate members regarding which month and day should be designated as "Physics Day." Once we receive multiple proposals, we plan to decide on "Physics Day" through a voting process by the members. We encourage you to actively submit suggestions for which month and day should be selected as Physics Day. Please provide as many proposals as you like. The specific schedule is outlined below. While we aim to announce the chosen date at the general assembly on March 31, 2025, actual "Physics Day" activities are scheduled to commence in 2026.
For reference, some tentative proposals from the committee members have been presented below, but we welcome unique suggestions beyond these ideas. Please submit your proposals, including the date you think is suitable for Physics Day and the reasons behind your suggestion, through the Google Form available at the URL below. You are welcome to submit multiple proposals.
