IUPAP CENTENNIAL SYMPOSIUM
IUPAP will hold a hybrid symposium at ICTP in Trieste from July 11 to 13, 2022 to commemorate its centenary.
Find more information about the symposium and program here.
In addition to sessions on three regions (Latin America, Asia-Pacific, and Africa and the Middle East), the symposium will include sessions focusing on the following key issues for IUPAP:
1. Women and underrepresented groups
2. Science advising policies
3. Early career researchers
4. Physics for development
5. Physics Education
Keynote lectures will be given by speakers including Takaaki Kajita, with a report on the results of historical research on IUPAP under the direction of Roberto Lalli (Max Planck Institute). IUPAP plans to use the symposium as an opportunity to promote the digitalization of its historical records. The Asia-Pacific session will be organized by Sunil Gupta (India), Mihoko Nojiri (Japan), and Kuijuan Jin (China).
IUPAP member countries in the Asia-Pacific region have agreed to use this symposium as an opportunity to introduce one another to events in the region for the purpose of promoting exchange within Asia and the Pacific. The "First Asia-Pacific IUPAP event on IUPAP 100 anniversary" symposium will be held on July 12 at 13:00 (JST) during the IUPAP Centennial Symposium to promote exchange in the Asian region. In the 15th Asia-Pacific Physics Conference (APPC15), a symposium will bring together the presidents of physics societies from around the world, and the Women in Physics symposium is also planned to be held in Taiwan.
First Asia-Pacific IUPAP event on IUPAP 100 anniversary

The "First Asia-Pacific IUPAP event on IUPAP 100 anniversary" on July 12th will focus on the challenges in physics research in the rapidly changing Asian region.
In 1922, Japan was the sole founding member of IUPAP from the Asia-Pacific region; today, 17 members hail from this region. Home to more than 70% of the world's population, the Asia-Pacific region is remarkably diverse in terms of culture, economic development, educational and scientific infrastructure etc. This extensive range of levels of development, also evident in terms of socio-economic and educational indices, means that the movement of people and scientific collaboration in the region are lower than other regions around the world. On the other hand, the region commonly faces the challenge of low participation of women. The IUPAP Centennial project aims to stimulate the growth of physics research by activating scientific communication and exchange in the Asia-Pacific region, which will, in turn, contribute to the transformation of the region.
Speakers at the First Asia-Pacific IUPAP event on IUPAP 100 anniversary
Mihoko Nojiri (Professor, High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK))
L.C. Kwek (Professor, Center for Quantum Technologies (CQT), National University of Singapore)
Tae Won Noh (Director, IBS Center for Correlated Electron System (CCES) / President, The Korean Physical Society (KPS) / Vice-President, IUPAP)
David Hutchinson (Professor, University of Otago in New Zealand)
Nilam Shrestha (Professor, Tribhuvan University / President, Nepal Physical Society (NPS))

The IUPAP 100 Photo Contest marking IUPAP's centennial anniversary was designed to showcase the beauty of physics and the fun of its research and education.
IUPAP is currently accepting entries for the IUPAP 100 Photo Contest at the following URL.
https://iupap.org/centennial/satellite-events/iupap-100-photo-contest/
The deadline for submissions is 13:59, May 10, 2022 (JST), or 23:59, May 9, 2022 (EST).
The contest is open to both professional and amateur photographers, as well as students and researchers in the sciences. Subject matter images should be related to physics research and/or education, the impact of physics on everyday lives or an event or process in which physics plays a role. Research-based submissions may reflect the subjects of scientific studies, people involved, instruments and equipment, and techniques developed through physics research. Images taken using special scientific equipment, computer simulations of physical processes, and those taken with any camera models will be accepted.
A total of 12 prizes will be awarded after a review, including six cash awards worth between 500 and 2,000 Euros.
